Employment history vs disability details

Interviewing

I am on long term disability but feel ready to return to work soon.  My current empoyer has been holding my job, but since the job is very stressful (high volume, short turn-around time), I have decided that I don't want to return there.  I recently responded to a job posting on Monster and was surprised at how quickly the HR dept called me, telling me how excited they were when they saw my resume/background and could I come in to interview the next day (which I declined), since the hiring manager was going on a 2 wk vacation.  My main question is, if/when they check my employment history with my current employer, will they be told that I am out on disability or are they only able to verify that I am still considered a current employee.  (I don't want to say anything during my interview that might be in conflict with information that my current company will provide).  Thank you

Hi Carol,

Thanks for reaching out.  This questions has a bit of a legal bent, so I wanted to send the below resource along to you. You should be able to find an organization near you to tell you legally what an employer legally can and can't say.  You should also ask how it works with long-term disability and looking for a job at another company - that could get touchy.

That being said, if you have a contact at your company that you trust it could also be worthwhile reaching out to them and asking what they would tell a prospective employer in that situation. Or if you know of anyone else at the company who has had a similar situation it could be helpful to speak to them as well.
