My husband has cancer

Work/Life/Cancer Balance

I worked at Tudors biscuit world and I was told today that I was not responsible enough to be general manager no more that I was missing too much work because of my husband's cancer

Career Coach Comment:

Becky -

Looks like you are going through some hard times.  I am not sure what your question is, so let me ask a few questions so we can determine how to help you.

When you began to take time off when your husband was first diagnosed with cancer, did you request use of your Family Medical Leave Act benefits? FMLA is a federal law that you can find more information about here: http://www.cancerandcareers.org/en/at-work/Legal-and-Financial/Cancer-and-the-ADA-FMLA. You may want to ask our legal experts more details of how FMLA would apply to your situation.

Did you employer, at any time, send you information in writing about FMLA benefits and the guidelines?

Has your employment been terminated or you were notified that since your are unable to currently fulfill the position of General Manager, they would consider you for another position within the company?

If your position has been terminated, you may be able to apply immediately for Unemployment Compensation, so you have some income, on the basis that you can work full time with some accommodations or work part time until you find a new full time position.

What about your health care benefits? Is your employer continuing to cover you? If yes, for how long?

Becky, if you can provide us a bit more details, we can probably provide you with more ideas of what to do next.

Margot

Cancer and Careers Staff Comment:

Hi Becky,

Thanks for reaching out, I'm sorry to hear about the difficulties you have been having with your job. It sounds like you're looking for legal advice, so I would recommend that you check out the National Cancer Legal Resource Center: http://www.nclsn.org/

You can search their services directory and find a local resource that can help you figure out what next steps to take: http://www.nclsn.org/members-directory/

Please let us know if you have more questions and I hope that this is helpful.

Best,

Sarah, Associate Manager of Programs, Cancer and Careers

Becky

Is there a Human Resource or Personnel department?  If there is, call them and contact them about FMLA benefits.
