Need help with job search

Kelly Z. on July 10, 2011

Interviewing, Job Search, Resume Building and Writing

I was recently diagnosed with cervical cancer and will be going through treatment in the next few months. The problem is I have run out of unemployment and will not be able to make payments for my car or utilities because I have no money coming in. I have had no luck finding a job and now I have the problem of having cancer. I would like to know what to do and if you could help me find a job and how to attack the health issue with my potential employer?

Career Coach Comment:

Kelly,

You mustĀ feel very stressed and I am sorry about what you are going through. What kind of work are you looking for? As you probably know, most jobs are found through networking rather than job boards or recruiters. Are you using LinkedIn as a networking tool? So many people who arehiring use that to search for people.

Your big challenge is that you will not know how your treatment will affect your stamina level and overall mental state until you have been trough it for a while. I certainly don't recommend telling a potential employer that you have been diagnosed with cancer and it is against the law for them to ask you.

As for your financial situation, you may want to reach out to your car finance company and ask about hardship and see if they can work with you. Also, I would check with unemployment and see if there is any kind of special extension available to you. I am sorry that I don't have an easy answer.

Please write back and give us more specific information so I can give you more personalized advice.

Warmly,

Julie

Unfortunately, the extension was denied for my unemployment because I did not work 20 weeks in the base year. As far as what kind of work I am looking for, I would like accounting and/or office work because that is what I am going to school for. But, I am willing to go into another field and learn new skills to be able to have a job.

Career Coach Comment:

Hi Kelly,

Thanks for writing again. Your skills are very universal and transferable. I would buy Tory Johnson's book, Will Work From Home which is about finding work from home. Also, send am email to everyone you know telling them that you are looking for administrative or accounting project or part-time work.

Good luck Kelly!

Take care,

Julie

Hello Julie,

Well, I have an interview tomorrow for a Front Desk Supervisor/Night Auditor job. I am happy about that, but also found out I will have to have surgery on August 18th. Do I tell them at the interview or after the job offer?

Career Coach Comment:

Kelly,

I would wait to tell them until you are sure you have an offer. Do you know how long you will be out? People schedule vacations all the time and then tell their future employer at the end so let's try that strategy forst.

Good luck!

Julie

Thanks Julie, that is what I went with. I will probably only be out a few days. It is just going to be an incision like you would have with a c-section, so having a front desk job will not hinder me. There is no heavy lifting, or going up stairs, so I should be okay. I will still talk to my Doctor though.
