The Oakland News Press shared the story of breast cancer survivor Erica Stone, who experienced the financial and emotional stress that often comes with a cancer diagnosis when ability to work is impacted. Her stress was reduced when the received assistance from a nonprofit that helps cancer patients facing financial hardships. 

Stone was only a few months into her new job when she was diagnosed and knew that it would be difficult to take time off for treatment while also supporting her two children. Receiving financial assistance from the New Day Foundation for Families helped her through this difficult time. The co-founder of New Day, Gina Spehn, explains the financial stress that comes with a cancer diagnosis: “Even if you are a middle class family who has two working parents and doing quite well what happens is that after several months, with cancer, you realize that income has been cut, bread winner can’t work, caregiver is reduced in their ability to work because of their treatment,” Spehn said.
