Oilers pitcher, David Diaz, was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma at the age of 20, during his sophomore season at Tarleton State University. The Peninsula Clarion reports that he did not have health insurance throughout the process, but he received a number of grants to cover the cost of treatment. His cancer was gone after only four months of chemotherapy and radiation.

Diaz's coaches were unaware of his cancer history, until he disclosed to them on Friday. He didn't feel a need to hide the story, he said that he simply didn't have time to share. Up until this point, only a few teammates knew after asking about the scar on his chest - a result of chemotherapy treatments.

Diaz's pitching coach, Brian Daly, said that he wasn't surprised and that "Diaz has a work ethic second to none and wants to earn everything he gets. He wouldn’t want there to be any possibility that something was being given to him due to sympathy."
