Pennsylvania Representative Sue Helm was diagnosed with breast cancer on one of her favorite days of the year – primary election day. She is continuing to work throughout her chemotherapy treatments and is even seen around the Pennsylvania State Capitol building wearing a wig – not to hide her cancer, but she feels that a hat isn't appropriate for sitting in the House chambers. 

Her fellow representatives at the capitol have been very supportive of her – one colleague suggested she come down to her district for a bigger selection of wigs and another offered to reschedule a hearing on a bill that Helm is interested in.

Helm plans to work from home on the third and fourth days after chemotherapy treatment and her staff is helping her ensure that she continues to carry out all of her legislative duties while going through treatment.

"I think my constituents know me and know I'm a worker," Helm said. "I'm not going to sit around and not do anything. It's better to keep my mind on my job than to sit around and think of me. I know it's curable. It is a bump in my road but my determination isn't any different."
