After being diagnosed with prostate cancer in May, Carolina Panthers’ Special Teams Coach Bruce DeHaven took time off to “consider his options.” But, as Darin Gantt of NBC Sports Pro Football Talk writes, despite his prognosis, DeHaven ultimately chose to return to work, claiming that “the lure of coaching was too strong to walk away from.”

2013 was DeHaven’s first season with Carolina, but he’s been coaching in the NFL for nearly 30 years. “I love coaching. I just do,” says DeHaven. 

According to the article, DeHaven is currently undergoing treatment, and the Panthers are working closely with him — even bringing in longtime assistant Russ Purnell to help out. But “DeHaven insisted on coming back for a 29th NFL season.”

The veteran coach’s passion for the game is obvious. For him, that love and enthusiasm seem to trump cancer and keep him going. As DeHaven says: “I’m so busy that I don’t even think of it unless someone brings it up.”
